ONCHAN.

ONCHAN in Middle Sheading, is about five miles long and four miles broad; bounded on the east and south by the sea, on the west by Braddan. and on the north by Lonan. The surface is undulating, the land fertile, and agricultural pursuits have been carried on with considerable success. The village is beautifully situated about two miles N.E. from Douglas, on the main road to Laxey. The parish derives its name from St. Conanus and is sometimes written Conchan. The parish church is dedicated to St. Peter, and occupies a pleasant situation near the centre of the village. The living is a vicarage in the gift of the Crown, and held by the Rev. J. Howard. The Wesleyans have chapels in the village, at Abbey Lands and Ballakilmartin ; and the Primitive Methodists have also a chapel in the parish.
