Ramsey Seaman
In Response To: Re: Joughin Clucas of Peel ()

Hello Robert,

When I was searching for my original ref for Frederick Brew's Admin. for Philip, I came across this newspaper item which I thought might be of interest for your study of Manx shipping (if a pleasure yacht can be considered to be shipping??).

From the Ramsey Courier, August 14, 1903.

"Death of a Ramsey Seaman

I was very sorry to hear, on Sunday morning, of the death of George Brew, master of the Ramsey pleasure yacht Majestic. The Majestic, which was engaged by Dr. Rowan, and had been on a cruise in Scottish waters, arrived here on Saturday, forenoon, when the crew reported that they had landed their skipper at Stranraer, in a very precarious condition, suffering from an internal attack, and on Sunday morning the sad news was received that George Brew had passed away. Immediately upon receipt of the news, flags were hoisted half-mast on all the pleasure fleet and other craft. The Majestic left here on Sunday night for Drummore, for the purpose of conveying the remains home. After a calm night, the Majestic arrived home before noon on Tuesday, having on board all that was mortal of the skilled seaman, who had many a time safely navigated the same craft through angry storms. As soon as the Majestic touched the quay, a number of willing hands jumped on board, and landed the coffin, the remains being taken to deceased’s late residence. It appears that cause of death was inflammation of the bowels. An operation had been performed at Stranraer Hospital, which the unfortunate mariner only survived by about four hours. The Deceased, who was only a young man (about 27 years), was a very smart, active seaman, was married, and leaves a widow and four young children to mourn his loss, and much sympathy is felt for the bereaved. – The crew who manned the Majestic were Dr. Rowan (Derby), John Crix and Albert Palmer.- The remains were removed from King Street on Wednesday for internment in Maughold Churchyard."

This was Frederick's cousin, and the grandfather of Keith Wright whose family is also on the Brew website: brew.clients.ch/BrewONS.htm
