Re: Preston Family History
In Response To: Re: Preston Family History ()

Hi Robert

I've pasted this from your earlier message:

*********************

"Tracing backwards from Robert Preston of 1804, his parents were William Preston Chr at Malew 6-03-1761 and Amelia Caralagh (or Careful) ch at Braddan 17-07-1757. They were buried in 1842 and 1823 in Malew. The stones still stand, and I can supply photos if required.

WIlliam of 1761 was the son of Anthony Preston and Margaret Duggon or Duccan, but there it gets shaky. I would welcome any data from further back. Amelia Caralagh is also a bit of a problem at present. "

****************************

I came across the name Amelia Caralagh a few days ago while looking at Craines and Gellings. My great grandmother's sister, Esther Clague b 1843, married John Gelling b 1837, ( son of James Gelling 1799-1878 and Elizabeth Kelly 1801-1879 who farmed at Ballacottier, Braddan ) and I was looking at John's grandparents.

Elizabeth Kelly was the daughter of Robert Kelly 1774-3 Jun 1861 (of Ballavitchal, Marown) and Jane Craine 1774-25 Aug 1834. Jane Craine was the daughter of William Craine and Elizabeth Caralagh (1755-19 March 1822 Braddan) who married 22 Dec 1770 in Braddan.

So I was going through Brian Lawson's list of Craine wills, and came across a ready-transcribed one for Elizabeth Craine 1822 Braddan which luckily mentioned her granddaughter Elizabeth Kelly, dau of her daughter Jane and Robert Kelly. The will also contains the following paragraph :

"I leave and bequeath to my sister Isabella Kneal wife of John Kneal of
Douglas my lincy blue gown.
I leave and bequeath unto my sister Emelia(Amelia) Preson(Preston) wife of
William Preson(Preston) of Malew my blue worsted gown."

Had you come across this before ?

I have a photo of Elizabeth Gelling nee Kelly b 1801 taken in the 1860s. As she was a first cousin once removed of your Robert Preston b 1804, I wondered if you'd like to see it.
