Re: Preston Family History
In Response To: Re: Preston Family History ()

Hi,
I went on line to post an enquiry and found a couple of interesting threads. You list a Preston family as follows

1861
Malew, district 6, pages 2+ 3
Robert Preston head age 56 labourer b Malew
Catherine wife age 47
George son age 12
John son age 11
Jane E dau age 10
Emily dau age 7
Catherine dau age 5
Mgt dau age 3

Robert preston was born at Malew on 26 march 1804, according to the family bible. He married Catherine Callister on 21 Nov 1848 and by 1853 there were six children, all one offs, which is quite an achievement. The births per the family bible are George 29-12-1848; John 28-12-1849; Jane Elizabeth 01-12-1850; Robert 23-10-1851; Joseph 11-10-1852 and Emily 14-12-1853. They then took a break, and had Catherine on 9 sept 1856 and Margaret on 20-02-1858. Robert, Joseph and Cath all died in infancy.

Of the parents, Robert Preston died on 30-04-1879 and was buried at Malew 2 May 1879. Cath Callister, his wife had been born on 29 Sept 1813 (bible) and christened 3-10-1813 in Malew. She died 3 Nov 1879 and was buried 5-11-1879.

Going forward, George, the eldest son became a master builder, and married Annie Moore at Braddan on 30 12 1869; He died 8-4-1910 and was buried at Douglas Boro Cem on 11 April 1910. Annie Moore had a tragic life. The couple had nine children, the last being twins, John James and Mona who were born in late July 1885. It must have been a difficult birth as the 39 year old Annie died on 2 Aug 1885, whilst John James died aged 3 weeks. Emily, another of their children was born on 28-12-1880, married Dr Robert Applegarth Hendry, my grandfather on 15 Sept 1910, and died in 1963.

Tracing backwards from Robert Preston of 1804, his parents were William Preston Chr at Malew 6-03-1761 and Amelia Caralagh (or Careful) ch at Braddan 17-07-1757. They were buried in 1842 and 1823 in Malew. The stones still stand, and I can supply photos if required.

WIlliam of 1761 was the son of Anthony Preston and Margaret Duggon or Duccan, but there it gets shaky. I would welcome any data from further back. Amelia Caralagh is also a bit of a problem at present.

FInally, Cath Callister, (the one who had 6 babies in well under six years) was born in 1813 and her parents were William Callister (1785-1863) and Martha Fargher (1785-1868).

I hope that is a help, and I would be delighted to hear from anyone who shares this Preston line or can add to it.

Perhaps the latest addition weighed 7lb 3.5 oz on 26 April 2009. She is our second daughter, Alexandra Amy Hendry, and is Robert Preston's Great great great granddaughter. We considered Catherine as a name, but selected Alexandra Amy instead, Alexandra from my wife's family, and Amy from mine. The previous Amy was Amy Stevenson of Balladoole, (1683-1750), the daughter of Capt John Stevenson, constable of Peel Castle and grand daughter of Major general Richard Stevenson and his wife, Isobel Christian of Milntown. Amy was the source of various legends that had been handed down in the family in recognisable form for 250 plus years, and is probably responsible for my interest in our family tree
