Re: Fell or Fayle
In Response To: Re: Fell or Fayle ()

Hi Lynne. I'm poking away again on your family. I didn't keep my notes from the last time, so have to start again. This time it's getting into my database so I don't lose it.

Here's a few corrections and thoughts I came across regarding your census entries.

1841 occupation for William Godsoe. It's not "whitesmith". I think it's "Whse/man" though not sure about the slash. Anyway, he's a warehouseman in 1851 and knowing that, I can get warehouseman out of 1841 too.

1851. We determined that Catherine Fell, visitor, is a niece, daughter of Jane's brother Robert. She was baptized 24 Aug 1834 Malew, d of Robt Fell and Jane Kewley. This was a huge clue to relate this family to the IOM families.

1861. The William Gordon GODSOE death in March quarter 1858 is likely Jane's husband, therefore Jane is a widow in 1861.
I just noticed Garot Fitzgerald at the bottom of the lodger list. He's the one who would have married the daughter Jane? So, we have both future husbands of the two Jane's here. Too bad the other lodger Thomas Nevins lost out :).
There's an interesting connection to Saint John, New Brunswick here, as the latter two lodgers were born there. There's a James Godsoe about 10 years younger than William in Liverpool and he was born in Saint John. I wonder if the reason we can't find William Godsoe in the IGI is because they were over in NB shortly after he was born?

1871. The address should be 70 Caryl Street. There is some kind of marginal note written in the column "66 an other called" that must mean something ... maybe it's a house they called on and got nothing?
Jane Godsoe should have been Gaddarn, because she was married to George at the time. As he was a mariner, he probably was at sea. The son "Robert "22 is clearly written but it ought to have been "Richard". The older son Robert was deceased by then. His widow Amelia and son John Henry Godsoe are in Oldham with her brother and sister.

I just noticed that the family below Jane is William L Edgecombe and Catherine Edgecombe + 2 infants. Catherine is Jane's daughter; they married in 1866.

1881. This looks like "Jane Gadderen". She's now a widow again, as George Gaddard died in March quarter 1875.
The nephew at the bottom "John H Godsoe" age 16 born in Southport is the son of Jane's eldest son Robert and Amelia (Kirkham). He's John Henry Kirham Godsoe, b June quarter 1865. Amelia (widow) had remarried shortly after the 1871 census.

Hope this helps. Next I'm moving onto the Fayles and Fells to see what else I can find.
