He sounded fairly dislikeable because on the birth of his 4th daughter with Catherine (Cregeen) he was supposed to have said 'Not another lousy daughter'. And became known in our family as 'Lousy Spence'. I am in no way sympathetic to this view but as he had 2 daughters by his first marriage I can understand slightly where he was coming from!
