Thanks Nigel that sounds very promising. I have managed to get a little more information from a cousin.

She has a marriage certificate for John which shows he married Mary Judge, and that his full name was John Thomas Crowe. On the certificate it shows his father as John Crowe. I know the ages on the census were often wrong so it is highly likely the one you found is our man.

Do you have any other details on this family or is there anything on any of the earlier census records - if you have them (if not I am in email contact with a lady that does).

Thanks your help is much appreciated. With the common surname we are probably related although I am only through marriage not a blood line Crowe.
