Frances - I'm sure you've hit the nail on the head - my ancestors were tee-total (one reformed), temperance society, methodists and primitive methodists - e.g. information I have found on Thomas Cowin emphasises these particular qualities throughout, even in Australia (Tenterfield NSW) - however he became a fruit farmer and named his farm 'Mona Farm' but was a Trustee of Tenterfield Methodist Church, etc.
I wonder how many emigrated on that basis?
