According to Castlemaine Historical Society, Francis Edwards may have had a connection with the then Regional Aboriginal Protector Mr. Edward Parker. Whether this influenced James Francis to name his son Christian Parker after Edward Parker is unclear. There was a large Methodist missionary movement in the Castlemaine/Daylesford/Hepburn area at the time and Parker was a Methodist minister. Methodism was consolidating its membership in the mid-1800’s. James Francis may have been neighbours with Parker or been a lay preacher in a local church. Perhaps it is just coincidence that the names and time periods are found together. I have not been able to establish if James Francis was a CofE worshiper in Liverpool, and if so then changed to Methodism during his time on the IOM. The Victorian Gold Rush was on at the time of James Francis and Elizabeth’s arrival in Victoria. The lure of gold may have brought them to Australia. I have not yet found emigration details for them.

I am happy to send Victoria Public Record Registration numbers related to any of the above details. I would like to hear from anyone with any firm details about this family, family anecdotes or thoughts. I would especially like to know what brought James Francis to the Isle of Man and any details about their daughter Jane Edwards and the Carin Family.

Cheers,
Helen Edwards
