Re: james scarff

I didn't get much on this James either. His Lonan baptism 24 Jul 1757 is just 2 months before an unnamed child of Philip Scarff was baptized 22 Sep 1757. The parents married in 1755 so maybe they were late in baptizing their first-born. James' grandmother Margaret Scarff als Quark's 1760 will left a lamb to her grandson James Scarffe. Neither father Philip 1805 or mother Ann 1816 left a will.

He might match a Lonan burial 22 Dec 1822 of James Scarffe on Brian Lawson's index. I have a Lonan burial of a James Scarffe 25 Feb 1823, which is 2 months later. Maybe one of us copied it down wrong or maybe these are different people? Lack of age doesn't help us here and it could be a different James.

I have a note that the will of Robert & Joney Lewney 1783 includes a pledge from "James Scarff of KK Onchan". No idea who he'd be.

I'm descended from Philip's older brother John of Ballaskerroo (ca 1717-1747). His granddaughter Margaret, d/o John & a widow of Thomas Clague , married my Gelling ancestor John in 1798 Lonan.
