Re: Quakers
In Response To: Re: Quakers ()

Dear Ms. Coakley,
Thank you for replying back, and the advice on Caps.

I went back to the Manx Notebook found the following data;

Quakers in the Isle of Man 1655-1735

In 1676 Robert Callow, a weaver and Jony Corlett nee Cowle and Margaret nee Cowle all of Maughold were presented and imprisoned for not receiving the Blessed Sacredments of the Lord's Supper.

Apparently,she would have been a convert, she refused to take the Lords' Supper. Which would make her to be presented, and imprisoned. You state NO Corlett was converted, she would have to be if she refused that Sacrement. Being summmons also to the court some...disobedience and those who appeared seemed rather to dispise that Holy obsevance....There were nine persons named in the presentment but these three along with known Quaker John Quayle and famliy who did not appear to answer the charges. These would have to been converted MANX especially the Corlett and Quayle names are MANX.

Also in the transcript in the notebook it talks about marriages; in the notebook it states:

In circa 1705 , note. this after 1700 where you state no converts after that, John Callow and Jony Kerriuch , John Costeen, and Jony Kerriush, Katherine Christian and William Quay, were presented ,,,,,,, for co-habitiation.....as persons in holy wedlock since Trinity Mouday last past which said persons has not yet marryed by me; other minister in church or chappell by Lycence or Banns published.

So Manx did intermarry, with Quakers, QUAY AND Kerriush are Manx.

Burials also, in churhyards of Parish:

In 1662 John Christian was presented for not bringing his childe to be baptized and then afterward burying his child in the churchyard.

also:

For instance John Preston was buried, a Castletown QUAKER was buried in his parochial churchyard in 1659.

also;
The paragraph about numbering the Quakers in the transcript it states:

Difficulty in determining numbers arises from the fact Quakers were not baptized in the parish record and with OTHER SOURCES, it is problmatic to determine how were born into the movement.

Quakers did marry Manx peoples. For as you see Joney Corlett did not take the Lords' Supper and with burying in parish graveyards, their children and even themselves, I am trying to find out about Joney Cowle Corlett and her sister Margaret Cowle, they both were imprisoned for their presentments of not taking the Lords' Supper.

Manx Note, thank you found it. So I still hoping for more data , there was a CALLOW BIBLE, apparently, surely, some Callow Quaker family may still have it, I have Bibles from the 1700's so maybe somewhere it could give more insight to marriages.

Joney Corlett nee Cowle and Margaret Cowle are whom I am interested in.

Do you know if they have markers on the graves??

Kindly yours,

Ms. Rosa
