Re: 12th Regiment IOM 1840's
In Response To: Re: 12th Regiment IOM 1840's ()

Hi Viv: I can see no connection at all with the Thompsons, Qualtroughs or Swifts as regards Catherine Monk (Wadeson). It would appear she or her soon to be husband were friends of the Qualtroughs only. I have very little info re the Wadesons, only that James Wadeson was the Paymaster/Lieutenant in the 12th foot. He was married twice, Catherine being the d/o his 2nd marriage to Jane Belton (born somewhere in England). His first wife was Catherine French (she died at Mauritius in 1832). Her father was William Pierre French, also a captain in the 12th foot, as well as a captain in the 84th foot. He and his wife both died in Quebec.

I can only assume that Catherine travelled to the IOM because of her husband's connection, however, where the two met is a mystery. He had no military affiliation as far as I am aware (he was a corn miller). There are several mentions of Accrington, Lancashire in the censuses, but again no mention of the names you are interested in.

I have the will of James Wadeson wherein he leaves his estate to Catharine, and you are welcome to a copy of my transcription if you wish.
