12th Regiment IOM 1840's

Hello
I've been researching a church plaque in Ramsey which mentions a Quartermaster from the 12th Regiment who retired to the IOM in the 1840's. It appears that he came to live in Ramsey with one Officer from 12th Regiment - John Thompson, and on the Island at the same time were at least 2 other officers from the Regiment - James Wadeson (Paymaster) and Lt Colonel Jones. Does anyone know why these Army men retired to the Island together? I can't find any connection in terms of their training, and they spent their army career all over the world.
Thanks
