Re: 12th Regiment IOM 1840's

Hi Pat
Thanks for replying. Sorry about my error re James Wadeson.living on IOM. I made an assumption based on something in a will. As I mentioned, I’ve been researching Bernard Swift the Quartermaster of 12th Regiment of Foot (East Suffolk) who came to live with Lt John Thompson also of 12th, his wife, and daughter Emma in Ramsey and died here shortly afterwards in 1844. One of his direct descendants I managed to contact has a will for Bernard dated Jan 1844 which mentions Catherine as being ‘now of the Isle of Man’- hence my assumption. Emma (Bernard's god-daughter) married Rev John Qualtrough in Andreas in 1841. You mention Catherine visiting the Qualtrough's in 1851. I also noticed this in the 1851 census as by then John Thompson was widowed and appears to be staying/living with his daughter and son-in-law in Andreas when Catherine visited. I gather the 12th Regiment spent time in Mauritius. Bernard's (I think only) son Quentin Swift was born there.
Do you know at all why Catherine chose to come to IOM from Gibraltar? Was there a strong link, do you know, with Emma?
The more you find out, the more questions seem to crop up.
Cheers
