the Manx tongue was almost dead in everyday life by 1870 except in some remoter areas - that is clear from many sources - there would still be some common phrases in use but T E Brown tried to push anglo-Manx as its replacement.
However the query was about 50yrs earlier - many of the early 1820's emigrants from Michael took Manx with them to Ohio (there are several comments that the language was spoken here until quite late in 19th C.
