Re: Edward Quayle and Mary Anne Looney

A lot useful information here, Averil.

Caroline Looney in 1861 is puzzling. Although she married William Callow in 1859, she is still using her maiden name in the 1861 census. Presumably it says she is unmarried. And William Callow is there as a married visitor, rather older than Caroline. By 1871 she is a widow. There was a marriage at Maughold on 20th April 1874 of John Kinrade to Carolina Callow. With the name Caroline being quite rare on the IoM at that time, that must be her remarrying.

In Woods Atlas of 1867 did you notice our old friend Gobneskeate? Perhaps George bought it back into the family from Thomas Kneale’s estate.

You have found an extra brother for George Looney, John baptised in 1794. It would be the next one, baptised in 1796, that married.

In the 1841 census at Ballagilley old Ewan and Mary have Catharine Looney with them, aged 14. She is the right age to be a granddaughter, but their two granddaughters aged Catherine would have been only 5, 6 or 7 at the time, too large a discrepancy even for the 1841 census. Do you think she might have ben great-niece Catharine, daughter of Christopher, son of Patrick?
