Re: Edward Macaulay
In Response To: Re: Edward Macaulay ()

Pat, you wrote that you had seen the two censuses 1861 and 1871, so you will have seen that Edward and Mary's places of birth were both given as England, on both dates, which should answer your question "Does anyone know where he taught and also if he was born on the Isle and went to England to get married".
The spelling would be that of the person who recorded the households (the forms were first filled in by the head of the household in 1911).

They were also in Ramsey in 1851 (38, Mathematical Teacher, b.England) at Little Cross, Maughold, Ramsey. Mary was 22, a Governess, b.England.
In the 1841 census, according to Brian Lawson's index, there was another Macaulay couple living in Ramsey:
MAC AULAY Mary 35 Ramsey 1464/8 56 12
MAC AULAY William 50 Ramsey 1464/8 56 12

You also wrote that Edward's father was Patrick. If you haven't seen his marriage cert., where did this information come from? The marriage cert should be the first source to look at to be certain who you are looking for, and you don't need to go to Surrey to get it. You can order it online to be posted to you, and it will be cheaper if you give them the year, quarter, volume, and page, which you can get from FreeBMD as you know the date.

The IGI has an Edward McCauley bapt in Liverpool in 1819 (parents John & Jane) but younger than the census ages.
