Re: Oates Family (Southern Australia)

Hi Lisa

There are 2 trees on Ancestry which have the wrong parents for your ancestor, Ann, wife of John Oates b 1826. It looks as though one person copied the details from the other. The mistake was caused by confusing 2 separate John Oates/Ann families, which resulted in "Catherine Pammer" being stated as the name of the mother of Ann.

To clear the confusion, here are the 2 households:

1) The WRONG household --- John Oates b 1811 and Ann nee Kermeen (married 9 Jun 1844 Lonan, husband age 34/wife age 23 at marriage/ IGI entry extracted from parish register)

Ancestry has transcribed this household in 1861 (when your John Oates was living in Australia):

1861
Grendle, Onchan

Name Age
John Oates 51
Ann Oates 40
Margaret Oates 15
John Oates 11
Catherine Oates 8
Thomas Callister 16
Catherine Pammer 79

***********************************
"Catherine Pammer" is a mistranscription of Catherine Cermeen, mother in law (terrible handwriting)

This is the same couple in 1851 (Ancestry's transcription):

Howstrake, Onchan

Name Age
John Oates 40
Ann Oates 31
Ann Oates 6
Thomas Oates 5
Margaret Oates 3
John Oates 1
Robert Oates 70
Mary Cain 23

****************************************
John Oates is a miller, b Patrick.
Robert is his father.

2) The RIGHT family:

John Oates and Ann Clague don't appear together in an IOM census because they didn't marry until 16 Nov 1851 Rushen (IGI extracted entry), and they were in Australia before the 1861 census. The IGI has only one child born to this couple (Catherine Oates bap 13 Jun 1852 Rushen) so presumably they emigrated soon after this birth.

This is where it becomes difficult to be sure of the identity of the Ann Clague who married John Oates. The marriage and birth of first child in Rushen suggest that Ann was living there by 1851, and/or perhaps was born there. It would be helpful to know whether the marriage entry in the Rushen Parish Register gives the name of Ann's father.

In the IGI, there's only one Ann Clague born in Rushen in the right time frame (based on age 82 at death in Dec 1908):

In 1841, this 13 yr old Ann is with her family (father James, a farmer at Billown, Malew) By 1851, this Ann is no longer with her family. There's a 24 yr old Ann Clague b Rushen , a servant at Bellabbey, Arbory, in 1851 (not far from Billown). But is this the Ann who married John Oates in 1851 in Rushen ?

In 1851, there's a 24 yr old John Oats, farm servant, at Clague Rowany House, Rushen.

Ann Clague, daughter of James Clague and Catherine Kinley, has been claimed by a different tree submitter as being the wife of Edward Taylor (married 1844 Rushen), although Ann Taylor nee Clague is 27, 36, 44 and 56 in the 51, 61, 71 and 81 censuses.

Does anyone know which Ann Clague married Edward Taylor ?
