Manx Genealogy

Re: Manx immigration Vermont 1820s

Here is my thinking, regarding the William S. Caine/Margaret _____ family of IOM and Warrensville, Ohio: (Sorry to be so long-winded, but this seems to me to be complex)

William S. Caine was born about 1791. He married Margaret _____. She was born about 1790, and died between 1860 and 1870. William and Margaret Caine lived in Warrensville.

According to the compilation of Women in the Western Reserve before 1840 (or born there before 1850) they immigrated to Warrensville in 1838.

1840 Warrensville census William Caine: (possible family members) 1 m ale 10-15 (Morrison); 1 m ale 20-30 (William, Jr.); 1 m ale 40-50 (William); 1 fem ale 10-15 (Ann); 1 fem ale 15-20 (Eliza); 1 fem ale 40-50 (Margaret)

1850 Warrensville census # 3153: Wm S. Caine 59 farmer IOM; Margaret 60 IOM; Wm 30 IOM; Morrison 19 VT

1850 Cleveland 1st ward census # 611: O. F. Welch 32 grocer (?) Ohio; Eliza 27 VT; Mary 5 Ohio. [IS THE VERMONT BIRTHPLACE OF ELIZA A MISTAKE?]This family has been difficult to identify for several reasons:

1. The deaths of the parents, William and Margaret, have not been located, and therefore haven’t been of help in more closely approximating a birthdate.

2. The family’s immigration from the Isle of Man has not been located, and is complicated by the fact that they apparently first went to Vermont. It seems unlikely that their port of arrival was New York, since the transportation to Vermont would have been minimal at that time period.

3. The daughters in the family have already left the family home by the 1850 census.

Only the fact that the compilation of Women in the Western Reserve before 1840 (or born there before 1850) gives the previous residence of Ann Caine and Eliza Caine as St Albans, Vermont, (and in Eliza’s case also IOM) initially let us connect Ann McFadden and Eliza Welch to this family, through the stated birthplace of Morrison Caine.

The above compilation also lists Mary S. Boyd, Mrs. William Caine, with previous residences as St. Albans, Vermont, and IOM. (Who was Mary S. Boyd? Was she, possibly “Margaret”, and someone misread an abbreviated “Marg”? I haven’t been able to locate the baptisms of any children of a William Caine and Mary Boyd.)

4. Birth records in Vermont are not indexed on a statewide basis for this time period, so it has not been possible to identify the birthplace of Morrison, or other possible children.

6. Census records for the daughter Eliza Welch 1850, 1860, and 1870 give her birthplace as Vermont. The 1880 census gives her birthplace as IOM, as does the death record of her daughter May Eveline Richards.

6. Daughter Ann, who married Joseph McFadden has not yet been located in the 1850 census, and she died before the 1860 census. She apparently left no children.

7. Averill's recent potential identification of the family as that of William Caine and Margaret Duggan, who married in Jurby, October 12, 1812, seems reasonable.

In addition, a burial for an infant, John Caine, in Jurby, December 11, 1815, also fits.

This family does not appear to be present in the 1841 IOM census, which also fits the fact that Morrison was born in Vermont about 1830.

8. However, that still leaves the problem of Mrs. William Caine, Mary S. Boyd, arrived in Warrensville 1838, previous residences St. Albans, Vermont, and IOM.

Following is what is known about this family:

Children of Margaret _____ and William S. Caine: probably others

i. William Caine was born on the Isle of Man about 1820. He lived in Warrensville.

+ ii. Eliza Caine was born in IOM or Vermont, about 1827, and died August 4, 1889. She married, in 1843, Oscar F. Welch. He was born about 1817, and died December 23, 1892, age 75 years.

Is he the O. J. B. McFadden who died in East Cleveland, October 25, 1872? He is probably the Joseph B. McFadden who married, in Cuyahoga County, August 5, 1856, Elizabeth Meade.

iv. Morrison Caine was born in Vermont about 1831. He married, in Cuyahoga County, October 8, 1851, Eliza J. Lee. By 1860, Morrison is in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, with his wife Eliza and mother-in-law Mary Lea. By 1880, Morrison Caine is in Urbana, Illinois.
