Re: Cox
In Response To: Re: Cox ()

Hello Ewan,

Looking at my previous message, I wrote that I looked at the ten years 1867-1856 when I should have written 1867-1858.

Regarding your problem with entering a surname, the IOW website allows you to search by just one letter so long as you put an asterisk after it. That was how I found the entries I put in my last message. It is quite quick to do it this way.
Their directions say "The first letters of a surname plus an asterisk will do", so I tried it with only one letter - e.g. "A*" - which was accepted.

Try this for births:
Select ten years by clicking on 1867 then hold down the shift key and click on 1858 which will highlight all ten years.

For "Surname" enter K*
(don't forget the asterisk!)

For "Forename" enter Alice

Then "Submit"

When the list comes up "Find on this page" (through Edit). Enter "Emil" (note, not whole name to cover variations).

There is a KINGSWELL, Alice Eliza Emily 1861 in Ryde.

Then "Find on this page" enter Ryde.
All the Ryde entries will be highlighted in yellow.

KNIGHT, Alice 1862
KINGSWELL, Alice 1863

At this stage while going through the Ryde entries I double-check that I didn't miss any Alice Emily.

Then top of your screen left arrow back to the previous page and change K* to L* and repeat process (everything else on the original search screen will remain the same, so it doesn't need to be put in again - this is what makes it so quick).

Let me know how you go?

Sue
