Re: Thomas Quayle
In Response To: Re: Thomas Quayle ()

Hi - I had a look in the 1851 census at the dozen or so Thomas Quayles b.c. 1837/38, and their fathers were almost all farmers or ag labs, with one miner and one mason. Of the slightly older ones (1835/36) there were Thomas Quayles as apprentices to a painter (father a sawyer), a shoemaker's appr. (father a farmer), and an appr. to a baker.
The only one of that age who looked possible in 1851 was at 3 Castle St., Douglas with father Thomas Quayle aged 49, Joiner, b. Jurby, wife Isabella 37 b.Douglas, Thomas 15 scholar, Jemima 10 scholar, and Lewis aged 1.

In the 1841 census Maughold, 2 19 98, Ballachrink:
Daniel QUAYLE 40 Blacksmith b. Isle of Man
Jane QUAYLE 39 Isle of Man
Daniel QUAYLE 13 Isle of Man
Elizabeth QUAYLE 9 Isle of Man
John QUAYLE 6 Isle of Man
William QUAYLE 4 Isle of Man
Thomas QUAYLE 2 Isle of Man
[No relationships given in 1841, and adult ages usually rounded to the nearest 5.]

In 1851 this family was at Conchan, Pinfold Lodge, with Daniel Quayle aged 50 blacksmith b.Conchan, wife Jane 45 b. Ballaugh, son Daniel Journeyman Blacksmith b. Maughold, John 14 Apprentice blacksmith b. Maughold, Willm 12 scholar b. Maughold, Thomas 10 scholar b. Maughold, James 7 b. Maughold, and Isabella 2 b. Onchan.
In 1861 they are still in Onchan, Ballaskelly, with Daniel 60 blacksmith, wife Jane 61, John 25 blacksmith, James 18 blacksmith, and Isabella 12.

Maughold parish register baptisms have:
Daniel [son of] Daniel Quayle [and] Jane Quayle [baptised] Parish Church 29 Oct 1826
Mary Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 23 Nov 1828
Elizabeth Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 27 Feb 1831
Margaret Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 20 Jan 1833. Burial: infant Daur of ----- QUAYLE Smith, Apr 20 1834.
John Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 11 Jan 1835
William Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 29 Jan 1837
Thomas Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 25 Aug 1839
James Daniel Quayle/ Jane Quayle Parish Church 27 Aug 1843

Daniel QUAYLE & Jane QUAYLE married 28 Aug. 1824 Lezayre [IGI]

Brian, do you think this Thomas is too young to be the one you are looking for?
You said he was in the USA in 1857, and as his wife was only 19 in 1860 they must have married in the USA unless he returned to the IoM? - But no sign of their marriage there.

The above family certainly passed on the blacksmith occupation as you can see, so the 1839 bapt is the main stumbling block.
