Re: Corkill Family
In Response To: Re: Corkill Family ()

Hi Alison,

I have quickly discovered that Corkill is far too common in the IOM to begin researching without some clue as to where to begin. Consequently I am going back to the NZ BDM people and gathering as much paper as possible before having another go at trying to make my first connection in the IOM.

Along the way I have hunted down a couple of leads that have proved to be not connected to me but showed promise initially.

I will certainly keep you in mind as I gather information - sorry I cannot be more useful as yet.

My Great Grandfather James Corkill came out to Australia with a brother (name unknown as yet). The brother stayed in Australia while James went on to NZ. He married Mary Jane "Chilie" Bennett in 1896 and they had one child Margaret Corkill (my grandmother). Mary Jane got the nickname Chilie as she was born on-board the Chile en-route to NZ (1872 trip to Napier NZ).

I found a William Corkill (born Maughold)member of the AIF who died of wounds in France WW1 who gave his NOK as brother James but this turned out to be (when I got Williams service records) false as that James was still in the IOM!

I will keep you posted

Regards,
John
