OF ASSISTANCE TO RE RENDERED TO REGINALD AGAINST THE KING OF NORWAY. A.D. 1220

THE King to the Justices of Ireland, greeting. Our beloved R[eginald] King of Man has shown unto us that the King of Norway deals craftily with him, and is preparing evils for his country, and likewise, that, as he himself asserts, he has rendered fealty and homage to us, and requiring undue tribute from him, on which account he has sought assistance from us in case he invade his territory. Wherefore, we command you, that, if it should so happen, and ye should hear of the same, ye shall render aid to the said King in defence of his land and of ours, such as ye are able, to our honour, and without loss to us, diligently providing that we and ours may be held harmless to the King of Norway and his people. Witness as above, by the same. ,
