S.Sharpe to Duke A commission is going to Laneashire to examine witnesses in connection with Lord Derby's claim for possession of the Island,presumably to prove his pedigree and the execution of the late Earl's will. Some legal gentlemen should to appointed to watch the proceedings on the Duke's behalf,
The clergy's case against Lord Derby in connection with the tithes is hanging fire for lack of funds with which to conduct it. If these are not forthcoming Lord Derby is likely to get the verdict

J.Quayle to Duke He has pleaded with the Bishop to provide funds to support the Clergy's case,but he pleaded poverty,saying he did not have above £1,000 in the world. Eventually, however,he agreed to call the clergy together for consultation and to help them so far as he could.
He advises,for reasons given,against sequestration of the Balladoole rents as asked for by Mrs. Stevenson.
More tea has been landed this year than in any he has known. It is to be hoped that this will not be noticed by mischievous people such as are always ready to represent things in a worse light than they really are.

Quayle to Harrison. He has told Mr.Read,who is in Ireland, that he will be given help to claim for the money of which he was robbed. The local merchants have agreed to contribute towards this,and a case has been sent to Mr.Bailey (a London solicitor) with instructions to sue in Read's name. Dow's son and his four men are still confined,and say the matter will be brought before Parliament. There is now a 20 gun ship stationed off the Island, and the ports blockaded by Irish barges, which much annoys the trade.

This latest outrage must surely convince the Duke that Dow,if not stopped,will ruin his interests in the Island and it is imperative that something be done to stop him.

The papers Dow seized at Kirkcudbright were the Revenue Books. Barges from Ireland, which are regularly relieved every fortnight,continue to watch all the ports,but are not interfering with vessels using them,
