Duke to Smelt the reasons given are absurd, the truth being that as Gov. in Chief he requires them to make himself acquainted with what has been going on. He finds this contumacious conduct to be in line with that which he has shown ever since the Duke came to the Island, but denies that he had threatened to have him (Smelt) deprived of his office. He also refers to his need for the house in Castle Rushen and closes by demanding that the correspondence he wants be handed to his Secretary, Mr.Gawne,who will call for it.
