[Appendix A(66) 1792 Report of Commissioners of Inquiry]

N° 66.

The EXAMINATION of Mr. PATRICK SHIMIN, aged about fifty-five Years, and a Quarter Landholder in the Parish of Kirk German, taken at Douglas, in the Isle of Man, the 7th Day of October 1791.

Examined by the Duke of Atholl,

THIS Examinant saith, That in the year 1765 he was sworn Moar for the parish of Kirk German ; and when he paid his Chief Rent, due to the Duke of Atholl, to John Quayle, Esquire for the benefit of His Grace, he received the Carriage Money by itself.

In the year 1767 he was sworn Moar again; that at the payment of Chief Rent for that year he was informed by Mr, Quayle, that Captain Radcliff had a right to receive the Carriage Service labour, or the money in lieu thereof, for that year. That year he summoned for Captain Radclif as many people as he thought proper to make a fence on a mountainous piece of ground belonging to Captain Radcliff and Mr. Quayle, as he understood, and that they went there and performed the labour accordingly.

From those persons that did not perform the labour he collected and paid to Captain Radcliff the money due in lieu thereof.

Cross-examined by the Keys.

When he collected the Carriage Money, he had no list given him of the persons from whom these payments were due, but collected them from the iinformation of old Moars of the parish.

That the Carriage Money which he collected was not charged against him in his Moar's debit with the Lord.

That the Lord's Chief Rent was paid separately to Mr. Quayle; and the Carriage Money was paid also separately.

That before the sale of the island the game was called the Lord's Game.

PATRICK SHIMIN
