(165) Ballacreetch Mill


From 1868 O/S Plan X.15 - SC 370795

The mill is fed from a dam to the north fed from the Sulby river which runs through the Abbey lands and joins the the Glass below Sir George's Bridge just off plan, bottom left hand.


 

The 1704 Composition book has under Miln rent Ballacreetch Quiry for the 2s milne rent charged for an Abby Milne in their parish

In the 1760 copy of the 1704 Composition book for Onchan is recorded the following entry dated 4th Aug 1748

Capt Paul Bridson of Douglas and Robt Lewne now owner of the said miln called Ballacreetch miln have this day agreed and compounded with the governor and officials on behalf of the Lord of this Isle for the Grist, Suit and Soken of certain tenants in the parish of KK Marown who are not bound tenants to any other miln viz Wm Kelly of Ballaglonna? For one quarter of land, Ann Bridson and Richd Hindley her husband of Ballavitchel and John Cubbon and [] Stephen Cottier ? for one quarterland, all being Barons tennts of St Trinions Land and of Robert Quine and John Cottier Ballahomey for half a quarterland each, John Cottier Ballayemmy for one quarterland and James Killey for part of a quarter in Ballayemmy being Lords Tenants together with grist suit and soken of all intacks to the said tenants and quarterlands belonging all new granted unto the said Bridson and Lewn and their assigns and to be at all times hereafter lawfull bound tenants to their said miln the fine agreed for and set on this corn position for sd tenants is 21s

It was this mill that John Oates took steps to protect as a security for his wife Reg deed Apr 1851 #66

dated 25 Feb 1839;John Oates(Ballachreetch, Onchan) + wife Margaret sell for 5s in trust to Mrs Jane Corran(widow, Ballameanagh, Onchan) the water corn mill, dam, water rights and premises & lands of John Oates lands + Croit-e-Myllin in the parish of Onchan to return to Margt Oates on the death of sd John Oates; Witt Robt Lewin, Wm Kewley
