CASTLETOWN.

Castletown occupies a pleasant situation in the parish of Malew, on the southern extremity of the island. It in 10 miles distant from Douglas, S.W., 12 from Peel, S.E., and 26 from Ramsey, S.S.W. It wan anciently called Rushen, and in supposed to be the oldest of the four towns on the island. It is the seat of government, the place where most of the principal law courts are held, and where is situate the prison for the whole inland, and is therefore entitled to he considered its metropolis.

The town has a remarkably neat and clean appearance, with an air of comfort, respectability, and tranquility rarely to be met with. The shops are good and spacious with a profusion of goods in all the different branches of the retail trade. The two hotels, the George and the Union, are both comfortable and commodious, and afford every accommodation either for private families or commercial gentlemen. The Market Places occupies a spacious area in the centre of the town. The market is held on Saturdays, and is well supplied with all kinds of provisions in season. Formerly this was the only market held on the island ; and anyone having corn, victuals ware, and such merchandise to dispose of, was compelled on pain of fine and imprisonment to first offer it here, and if unable to sell was at liberty to dispose of it elsewhere. Subsequently markets were established at Peel, Ramsey, and Douglas. The government chapel of St. Mary occupies a pleasant situation on the Parade. It is a spacious and elegant structure capable of seating 1,300 worshippers, and forms a great ornament to the town. The Revd. E. Ferrier is the chaplain. The other places of worship are for Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Roman Catholics.
