Peel

Is a town and seaport occupying a pleasant situation on the western coast of the island, in the parish of German, and Sheading of Glenfaba. It in distant 11 miles W. from Douglas, 12 N.W. from Castletown, and 16 S.W. from Ramsey. The name is derived from the Saxon, Peel being the name given to the earthen mound or fortification on the site of the present castle, and afterwards applied to the adjoining village. The town is irregularly built, the streets narrow and inconvenient, and the houses crowded together in a very inelegant manner. Some improvements have, however, been made within the last few years; and if these continue Peel will wear a different aspect to what it does at present. The chief industry of the town is the fishing, and during the season Peel is the principal resort of the herring fleets of this and the sister isles. The parish church of St. Peter is a plain structure in the Market Place capable of accommodating 600 hearers. The living is a vicarage in the gift of the Bishop, and held by the Rev. J. G. Williams. There are also places of worship for the Wesleyan, Primitive Methodists and the Hallelujah Band.
