Malew Burials 1739-1742

This list of burials has been checked against the official copy (indicated as 1911 in my notes)and the actual register, the official transcript is excellent - the transcript by the IoMFHS is generally very good but they have managed to misread the names of several parents or spouses as actual defuncts. These years were selected as they correspond to a particularly bad epidemic period in Malew - deaths by smallpox noted (sp) .

There are no burials recorded between 19 Mar 1738/9 and the first record transcribed here - it is possible that there were no burials but judging from previous years I would have expected about 5. A new register was commenced in April 1740 - the earlier register is very untidy in sections (and difficult to read as tightly bound) - the entries from Aug 1739 are found in a section of loose papers at the end of that register. A preliminary check for baptisms among the many child deaths from smallpox (I would have expected them to be around 6 months to 10 years old) has not located many, which gives rise to suspicion that the earlier register is deficient.
