Ballure Chapel, Ramsey (Maughold)

[Ballure Chapel was established as a chapel of ease to Maughold prior to building of St Pauls - its graveyard was very much the "Potter's Field" used by strangers rather than old established families who buried their dead at Kirk Maughold]

Sacred to the memory of William Berridge, late of the City of Lincoln, gentleman, who died at Ramsey in this Island on the 2 August 1838, aged 36 years.

In loving memory of Elizabeth Simpson, wife of Robert Simpson of Seyforth House, Ramsey, late of Cronstadt, Russia. Daughter of the late John Barwick of (Homewood?) Ontario, Canada. Born Feb 23, 1807, died December 30, 1881.

Here rests the body of William Heardon, late Master --- in the R. N., who departed this life on the 18 of Jan 1829, aged 38 years. Also here lieth the body of John, James, and Mary, sons and daughter of James and Margaret Anderson. Mary died June 7, 1764, John died June 7, 1765; James died June 20, 1765.

Samuel Catheard ‘Our Wee Ducks,’ died 21 October 1880, aged 15 months.

Mary, wife of Joseph Peate buried 9 Feb 1772.

To the memory of N. H. Cattrell of W. Bromich, who departed this life the 11 August 1846, aged 75 years.

Sacred to the memory of J.W. Wareing who departed this life April 16, 1830, aged 34 years. Also Mary Ann, his wife, who died July 20, 1830, aged 31 years.

This stone is laid by his affectionate daughter, to the memory of Benjamin Armytage of Thickholson, vicar of Huddersfield, who died in Ramsey on the 1 November 1—1, aged 55 years.

Here lieeth the body of Thomas Brockbank, who departed this life June 9, 1766, aged 37 years. And also Esther Brockbank alias Asken, wife of the above, who departed this life 21 March 1795, aged 71 years.

John Curphey was buried here 8 July 1815, aged 49 years.

This stone is erected by Thomas Christian in memory of Daniel Christian, his father, who departed this life on the 30 March 1800, aged 57 years.

Iron railed: Sacred to the memory of Thomas Young, M.D. of Littleborough, who died in Ramsey April 19, 1861, aged 59 years. Also the memory of his son, George Young, who died February 15, 1834, aged 7 years. Thomas Young, died December 1, 1845.

Sacred to the memory of Sir Henry Claude Loraine Bart, who died January 4, 1851, aged 38 years.

Nicholas Hunter was buried here the 3 February 1776, aged 29 years.

Here lyeth the body of Robert Black, Esq. Many years master in his Majesty’s Royal Navy, who departed this life on the 10 day of April 1816, aged 83 years.

 

In memory of John Southward, who departed this life 21 November 1858, aged 50 years. Also Sarah Ann, wife of William John Southward of Birkenhead, daughter in law of the above, who died at Glen Auldin, 28 August 1880, aged 32 years.

A tribute of affection, erected by their children in memory of Thomas Banks of Liverpool, who died March 25, 1858, aged 44 years, and of Mary Ann, his wife, who died 20 June 1862, aged 46 years. Also of Annie, daughter of the above, who died August 20, 1861, aged 19 years.

There remaineth therfore a rest to the people of God. Also Elizabeth Fricker, sister of the above, who died at Ramsey, Sept 27, 1868, aged 91 years.

In memory of Mrs. Elizabeth Brew, who departed this life the 24 November 1858, aged 77 years. Also in memory of Mrs. Martha Trevitt, who departed this life, 6 August 1857, aged 80 years.

In the memory of Capt. Nathaniel Ireland, late of Liverpool who departed this life ----. Also with her husband here repose the mortal remains of Elizabeth Ireland alias (C)owle, who departed this life 3 June 1813.

Sacred to the memory of J. Christopher Stalker late of Castle Sowerby, in the county of Cumberland, who was buried in this Chapel Yard, on the 4 August 1819.

In memory of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Haine of Ramsey, who departed this life on the 6 of Sept 1806, aged 42 years. Also Mrs. Elizabeth Cullin, mother of the above, who died Dec 4, 1817, aged 92 years.

Beneath this stone are interred the remains of John Lees, late of Halifax, Yorkshire, who died at Ramsey, February 22, 1858, in his 71 years.

Here repose the remains of Thomas Smith, who departed this life February 9, 1793, aged 60 years. Also Sarah, wife of the above, Thomas Smith, departed this life October 2, 1800, aged 65 years.

Sacred to the memory of Gilbert –are, late of Douglas, who departed this life on the 10 day of March 1791 in the – year of his age.

In memory of John Cruickshanks, first officer of the Ship Madras, who was lost at sea by the foundering of the Vessel, whilst on the voyage from Calcutta to Liverpool, aged 26 years.

This tablet is erected by a mother & sister in remembrance of an affectionate and dutiful son and a beloved brother.

In memory of William Paton of Largs, who died July 22, 1856, aged 63 years, and of James Paton, their son, who died on his voyage from Valparaiso to England, May 6, 1861, aged 41 years.

Sacred to the memory of Andrew Maney- formerly Master Carpenter on board the H.M.S. ‘Hazard’ and many years a teacher in the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth Dockyard, who departed this life the 14 March 1853, aged 70 years. Also Mary, wife of the above, who died November 9, 1861, aged 48 years.

Here lieth the body of Maxwell Douglas, who departed this this life 9 April 1813, aged 75 years. Also Jane Douglas, his wife, who departed this life 23 April 1818, aged 68 years. (Note: by the side of the above is a rough broken piece of stone as headstone with the name John Douglas ----)

In memory of John Douglas, paymaster, Sergeant in the Manx Fencibles, Chief Constable & Court Keeper of Ramsey, who departed this life 26 November 1853, in the 74 years of his age.

Sacred to the memory of John Ellis, formerly of Whitehaven, who died at Ramsey, 14 October 1859, aged 68 years.

In loving memory of Jane Murray relict of John Murray, who died Nov 18, 1888, aged 82 years. Also James Murray, son of the above, 2nd officer of the ship ‘James Crosfield,’ lost off Langness Point, Isle of Man, 6 Jan 1867, aged 23 years. Erected as a small tribute of respect by Capt Thomas Crowther, Comenderate the memory of this friend Capt Harry Crookshank of Stornoway, North Britain, who departed this life at Ramsey, 14 September 1850, aged 57 years.

Erected by Robert Robinson, in memory of his brother, who was accidentally killed by a fall from the Mast Head of the Schooner, Elizabeth of Douglas, the 23 August 1847, aged 23 years.

In memory of Margaret Arbecomb late of Milford, who departed this life the 30 September 1849, in the 69 year of her age.

Erected by James Orr, in memory of his mother Margaret Orr, who died February 3, 1833, aged 80 years. Also of his father, Thomas Orr, who died September 10, 1848, aged 83 years. Maria O’Halloran, only daughter of James Orr, records her fond rmembrance of her loving & beloved father, who died August 9, 1884, in his 90th year.

In memory of Mary Elizabeth Dumbell, the beloved wife of Alured Dumbell, Esquire High Bailiff of Ramsey, and daughter of the Revd John Bifson, M.S.D. late Vicar of Carson, Lanc. Died 9 June 1874.

In memory of George Paton, formerly of H.M. Reg. Cape Mounted Rifles at Ormly, Lezayre, 4 December 1867, aged 80 years (died). Also, to the glory of God and the affectionate memory of his son Revd George Paton, who for 35 years was Vicar, Curate and Chaplain of Ramsey, who fell asleep Jan 13, 1900, aged 64 years. And of Capt George Herbert Paton, son of the Revd George Paton, drowned in the North Sea, Nov 14, 1894, aged 24 years.

In memory of Eleanor Annie, daughter of the Revd George & Ellen M. Paton, who died October 13, 1872, aged 18 years [? days ]. Also of Ellen Isabella, daughter of the above, George and Ellen M. Paton, born November 1873, died 6 May 1875. Also, to the memory of Jessie Theodora, youngest daughter of the above, George & Ellen Mylrea Paton, for some years a Church worker in this parish, who died whilst in the discharge of her duties as Queen’s Nurse at Bradford, Manchester, on St Andrew’s Day 1905, aged 29. Also: These windows are dedicated by many of her friends.

These seven windows have been given by of Port Lewaigue in the Parish of Maughold by Annie King, 1908. In loving memory of John King of Manchester, who died at Beach Cottage, Ramsey, on the 16 July 1880, aged 29 years.
