CALLOW / KERRUISH Maughold
In Response To: Re: John Callow 1763-1833 ()

Hello Rick,

Many thanks for the links - I was just asking on spec., but nothing you write would be clogging the board! You will have noticed that people quite often answer messages written as far back as 2001 when they see a connection, and everything may be useful to someone, sometime.

It would probably be easier if I give you the Callow/Kerruish connection in which I am most interested, if you would please tell me whether CR touched on it anywhere in her Callow charts? It is a small hope, because she didn't record them other than as "8 children + Robert m Ann Costen, Booilevelt" on her KERRUISH, Cardle, chart, and she had the wrong William Kerruish father for them. The Robert Kerruish later of Booilevelt whom she names was bapt in 1699 - not the eldest, but child number 6. His eldest brother was b.1691, and couldn't possibly have been the son of William Kerruish bapt 5 April 1681 "de Carradal". William b.1681 was the younger brother of Robert Kerrruish 1679-1717, the Cardle heir - one of a long line of Robert Kerruishes in Cardle.

I'm interested in the Isabel CALLOW who married William KERRISH/KERRUISH in Maughold on 20 Jan 1690/91, and the presumed parents of the above Robert. In William Kerruish's will (1730) he was "of Carradell" [Cardle], as was his son William in his 1728 will ("This is affirmed to be the Last will and testament of Wm Kerrish Junior of Cardel within the parish of KK Maughold who Departed this Life in December 1728..." etc).

These were the children of William and Isabel, named in the wills of William KERRUISH and his son William:

Maughold burials:
Wm KERRUISH buried Dec 7 1728
Wm KERRUISH Bro to ye above Wm buried Dec 14 1728

In the father William's will he "Bequeathed to his Loving wife Isabell Kerruish alias Christian..." which stumped me for a long time because there was no Isabel Christian marriage to William Kerruish at that time, and no will - no sign of an Isabel Christian of the right age in Maughold records. Joyce Oates, who has transcribed 100s of wills and summaries which are in Brian Lawson's wills' index and Manx Notebook, believes that the "als Christian" was a scribe's error in William's will, because he was also writing about her daughter Isabel CHRISTIAN als Kerruish, and had "Christian" combined with Isabel on his mind! And that it should have read Isabel Kerruish als CALLOW.
Additionally, Joyce believes that Isabel Callow was the daughter of Edward CALLOW of Ramsey, and Isabel CHRISTIAN, and had a brother John Callow of Ballacreggan. She also thinks that William Kerruish d.1730 (of Cardle in wills) was also recorded of Ballacreggan in uncle Ewan Kerruish's 1695 will - and that this Ewan was a brother of the Cardle heir Robert Kerruish d.1675.

Many thanks if you can throw any light on this.
