Re: convicts to Australia
In Response To: Re: convicts to Australia ()

Hi Sue,
Yes it is the same person, he was the only one of those taken off at Cork to survive the cholera that occurred on board.
He arrived on the Mary Ann in 1835 the same year as his mother and some of his siblings. To date I have found nothing to suggest that they ever met again.
I have his Ticket of Leave which was recommended by the Muswellbrook Bench January 1844 and issued 14 May 1844 which states that he was to remain in the Morton Bay District. We think now of Brisbane when Morton bay is mentioned but in 1844 it included much of northern NSW.
I have not found a Certificate of Freedom or any other documentation such as death or marriage. Perhaps like many convicts he took a new name.
He had a remarkable number of tatoos the most intrigueing of which was "CLAIJL" which may have been mistranscribed, unfortunately only the printed version now exists, I have not resolved a satisfactory answer to this.
Living in the "Past Lane" as a New Zealand friend says is stimulating and fun.
Cheers
Peter
