Re: Garrett family (Kirk Michael)

Donna's extract of John Garrett's marriage from the Kirk Michael Parish Marriage Records certainly ties John as a son of John Garrett and Ann Radcliffe. My descent comes from Daniel who I believe is also a son of John Garrett and Ann Radcliffe. I have reached this conclusion through eliminating all other Daniel Garretts born between 1780 and 1800.

My Daniel is listed as "licenced vitualler" on his daughter, Mary Ann's (my great Grandmother) death certificate. The informant being her son. Unfortunately, there is no occupation listed on Mary Ann's marriage certificate. However, there is an occupation, "mason", listed on her sister, Elenor's marriage certificate. In the past few years I have come to think that this latter is the more reliable piece of information, as it is given some fifty years earlier than the death data and is given by Daniel's daughter herself.

If my Daniel was indeed a mason this would certainly be a tie in with John who is a mason.

Their father, John, died as result of an accident in a marle pit. (See the Decree of Admon for John Garrett, 1802 on Lawson on IOMFHS) and left a widow, Ann, and chidlren John, William, Daniel, Ann, Jane & Margaret. The decree also lists the deceased's next of kin as John Garrett, Wm Garrett and John Garrett. I have been unable to determine if any of these were the deceased father, or if William was a brother and John an uncle or cousin.

Thus I am stuck on the parentage of John Garrett who married Ann Radcliffe.

I am also stuck on the parentage of Ann Radcliffe. A couple of years ago I came to the conclusion that her parents were not William Radcliffe and Ann Sayle of Ballkelly of Andreas. Although there is an Ann listed as William's daughter in his will (See William Radcliffe, 1783, Lawson) Ann is not listed in her mother's will nor are her children ( See Alice Radcliffe als Sayle, 1810, Lawson). At the time of Alice's death Ann Garrett als Radcliffe is still alive, a widow, with children and probably pretty destitute. She died 1812 and was buried in Lezayre (See Lawson burial index).

I believe Sue is correct. The Ann Radcliffe who married John Garrett in 1787 in Maughold (the marriage record states, if my memory serves me correctly, that John was from Lezayre which would imply that Ann was from Maughold) and therefore she is probably the dau of William Radcliffe and Jane Killey.
