Re: R. Joughin and E. Brown m. NZ 1873

Hello, Jeny. It’s good to see some one researching into this family again, now that we have lost the great chronicler of the family, Bert Salmon.

On 24th June 1986 I met Jeny Quiring at her parents’ house in Mosman. Was that you? You don’t have to reply here but can write to me at pjallen at btinternet.com (make the usual change).

The Robert Joughin b 1844 in Bride was the son of two Joughins. His father Robert came from a family originating at Crosby farm, Bride. 1844 Robert’s mother, Ann, was born in 1819. At first I thought she was Anne the 1819 daughter of my g-g-g-g-uncle William Joughin, Cronkbane, Bride. But Constance Radcliffe was able to show that that one must have died in infancy. Instead she was the 1819 daughter of Charles Joughin and Elizabeth Quark. The NZ death certificate, so much more informative than ours, confirmed this, albeit in garbled form. In 1986, by process of elimination, I had identified this Charles Joughin with the one baptized at Bride in 1775, son of William Joughin and Anne Quayle of the Phurt, Bride. That still made us related, but less closely. Your Charles never fitted well with the Phurt family. Then a few years ago Sue, who first responded to your message, showed that this Charles was baptized at Andreas in 1778, son of Charles Joughin and Margaret Christian. This couple were not married, but might have done so had Margaret not died four months after the baptism. Instead, Charles went on to marry Ann Kee. He came from the line of Andreas Joughins mentioned in the Brew thread on this board, and was the great-grandfather of Eleanor Tynwald (baptized Eleanor Florence) Joughin, born at sea.

Where would you like to go from here? We each know a lot about this family that will be new to the other. I am looking forward to hearing from you again, on this board, or by e-mail, to which we will need to resort sooner or later.
