if you are asked to transcribe then do that - the changing spelling of placenames is often interesting (tho possibly not so much in 1850's Bride) - the g and q somehow I doubt - possibly your interpretation, u and v were often the same letter (that's how we got Evan instead of Euan in so many mistranscribed names.
