Re: John Gelling
In Response To: Re: John Gelling ()

Hi Eric,

Thanks!! was taking me awhile with the 1841 census - Ancestry had Catharine's age transcribed as 50 instead of 10. (Daughter of John & Margaret)

Listed all children in 1841 census below, thought I would add this to go along with the 1841 census if you didn't have it, a little bit still needs to be transcribed

Census - 1841 Isle of Man
Place - Arbory District 1
Census Area - “District 1, South District; Balladoole Cronk Daugh? to plough Inn and Ballakeigen and on the High Road to Kirk Malew, to the Boundary of the parish - and then over, West on the Highway the houses on both sides, including Narville? and Ballaclague and John Watterson Walker’s House to Colby Bridge including and ending at Henry Moore’s and Thomas Moore’s Houses at the East end of Colby Bridge.”

1841 census at Ballanowin, Arbory HO107/1463/3 1 7 pg 8 (464355)
John GELLING 45 Farmer Y
Elizabeth GELLING 15 Y
Catharine GELLING 10 Y
Thos GELLING 8 Y
Robert GELLING 6 Y (John gelling - Twin of Robert, check Brian's Burial Index 06 Sep 1832 Arbory, age 1 week)
Margret GELLING 4 Y
John GELLING 2 Y
>Jane WATTERSON 20 F. S. Y

Have been working on Catharine Gell with John Moore

Census - 1881 Isle of Man
Census Place - Braddan K District 2
Census Area - “Commencing from the Peel Road (and) following Brook Moore Stream until it a joins the Straug Road, thence along that Road to the Quarter Bridge, thence along the Castletown Road to Mount Murray Stream, which is the boundary of - Parishes of Braddan (and) Santon - along that Boundary until a joins the Parish of Marown, (and) from that point along the boundary of Braddan.”

Page 19 -
Lines - 3 thru 9

Name - John James Keys
House / Place - 89 BallaCottier
Relation - Head
Condition - Married
Sex / Age - M / 32
Occupation - Blacksmith Master employs 2 apprentices
Born - Douglas, Isle of Man
Household Members - Catharine (Moore) Keys / wife, John James Keys / son, Anna C Keys / daughter, William Cowin / Stepfather, Anne Cowin / mother, Ellen Moore, sister - in - law

I believe the Ellen Moore listed as sister in law is actually (Esther Christian Moore) daughter of Catharine Gell & John Moore

Also Brian's burial index indicates Esther Christian was buried 30 Oct 1882 Santon age 19

Seems to tie nicely together, Needs more investigating!

The Ann Cowin is Ann Moore (leaning towards Robert Moore & Jane Kneale as parents), William Cowin is her second marriage - 22 Oct 1868, first marriage to James Keys of England 3 Sep 1846.

Thanks again!
