Hello Jean,

That was a question from Lois, not from me. I have followed only two Skillicorn lines, whereas she has comprehensive records on all the Lonan Skillicorns. If she has given you information you can be sure that it is accurate and from original records.

Because Lonan research is hampered by the gaps in the parish registers (especially marriages), by the number of Skillicorns with the same forenames, by only fathers' names being given at baptism, and with other problems mentioned previously, people have put charts and pedigrees on the Internet where they have invented people to fill the gaps or tied in known couples simply because someone has the same name. They have added children who don't exist to couples who did exist.

There is absolutely no point in trying to find correct Lonan ancestors by using only the IGI, and other people's posted pedigrees unless the sources are given for each person in every generation. These sources need to be from official records, not from other people's work, and you need to look at all the ones available from ROs or on film, including the parish registers and wills. Also censuses and MIs which are useful for family groups. That way you can be sure that you have the right ancestors step by step back from your parents - and you won't need to worry about having made assumptions or that you have been given unreliable information. There really is no other way.

Good luck with this.

Sue
