Re: Ennett history
In Response To: Ennett history ()

This comes from my Brew file on Steve Brew's website, in the section about John BREW (1788-1849) who married Alice ENNETT or ANNETT (or sometimes Aennet). The family appeared to move between Ramsey and England, and at least one child emigrated to Buffalo, USA. She was joined by other relatives from the IOM.

John BREW was baptised in Andreas on 6 July 1788, married Alice E[A]NNETT, and was buried in Ramsey in 1849, aged 62. Their children were:

Christiana, baptised in Lezayre 11 December 1808 (emigrated to USA).

John, baptised 8 September 1816, died 1879, farmer and butcher of Ramsey who married Catherine KENNISH. They had 10 children, all baptised in Ramsey.

William, baptised in Ramsey 23 August 1818.

Catherine, baptised in Ramsey 5 November 1820.

Ann, baptised in Ramsey 19 March 1826 (son emigrated to USA).

Mary.

Margaret Elizabeth.

1841 Census: Port-e-Vullen Village, Maughold, John BREW, Ag. Lab., aged 60, with wife Alice, aged 55, son John, aged 23, daughters Cathrine, aged 19 and Ann, aged 13, all born on the Isle of Man, and Elizabeth, aged 5, born in England.

1851 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, Alice BREW, Head, widow, aged 66, born Douglas, son John, married, aged 34, butcher, born Ramsey and his wife Catherine [KENNISH], aged 28, Alice’s daughter Catherine, unmarried, aged 30, born Maughold, and granddaughter Catherine, aged 1, born Maughold.

1861 Census: Ballure Road, Ramsey, Beach Cottage, Alice BREW, aged 70, with Catherine, daughter, unmarried, aged 30 [sic]. Alice was buried in Ramsey in 1864, aged 79. Catherine married Thomas CALLOW in 1867.

John Brew of Ramsey (1788-1849) left a combined will made with his wife Alice. The assets weren't distributed until after Alice's death in 1864. The "updated" information on the children shows eldest daughter Christian HOLDEN was in Buffalo, New York; Mary COWLE was married to Robert COWLE - her second marriage. Her first marriage was to ANDERSON; Margaret T?urton, previous marriage to T?raves [difficult to read]; Elizabeth PROUDFOOT; Ann SAYLE married to William SAYLE of Maughold; Catherine Brew was left the house they had recently [in 1849] bought in Kirk Maughold Street in Ramsey, commonly known as "John Sayle's house".

Debra Tosh added "My great grandfather, William Sayle (1847-1922), came to America when he was 17. He is the son of William Sayle (1814-1901) and Anne Brew (1826-1897). My gggrandmother Anne was from Ramsey and my ggrandfather William was from Maughold. They married 10 February 1844 and had 9 children. Alice Margaret (1844) married a John Allen, Thomas Sayle died young, William Sayle came to America, Emma (1852), Sophia Elizabeth (1854), Anne (1856 - possibly came to America and married Frank Henry Norton, my grandfather was named after him), Eve Jane (1858 married Robert Christian), Isabella (1863), David (1864), Assinath (1868-1870), John (twin of Assinath).... When my ggrandfather came to America, he travelled from Buffalo, NY to Cleveland, OH. There he met Ella Kaneen (her parents were from the IOM), and they immigrated to Kansas in 1876. They had 10 children."
