Re: McDonald
In Response To: Re: McDonald ()

The death certificate for Sophia Amelia Beal formerly McDonald daughter of John has John's birth place as Isle of Mann. This may be the source of the Isle of Man connection. The census records though disagree with this information. Manx people usually gave Isle of Man rather than England as a place of birth:-

According to an online source by another researcher of this family Jonathan or John McDonald was, "Buried at Green Mountain Cemetery in Dutch Hollow The Isle of Man was part of Scotland until 1735, when it came under English rule. "McDonald" is a Scottish name. Jonathan McDonald came to America with two brothers and worked as a coal miner. The two brothers soon left and settled in Canada."

See the IOM wiki page for a history of the island. The Scots last ruled the island in the 14th century:-

There was mining in the Isle of Man it's possible John came over to the island to work in the mines but it's unlikely he was born on the island.
