think it meant that he owned no property but moved from farm to farm for work living in provided accomodation (many farms still had at that time the communual living space in or near the yard - usually up some external stone steps to a room over some working building) - reasonable assumption that he was unmarried - from soubriquet sounds as though relied much more on muscle than any trade skill
