Re: Ballamona Asylum Records
In Response To: Re: Ballamona Asylum Records ()

Kay the hospital records are safely stored in the Government archives but access is obviously restricted for reasons of confidentiality. Like the Census info.

people gave expecting it to be kept safe for 100years.[although a few years were taken off that period for 1911.] There has been some research on the admission

of women patients [in need of care in opinion of the society of former era ---until 1920?? ] by health service staff . Off course the person had to sign

confidentiality agreements & no names appear in the resultant document.

It was quite common for people to fear the stigma of having relations in such a hospital & as you say conceal this if possible. Some had serious illnesses

while many others only had learning disabilities. Most of those who were ill would now be having medication & care in community or nursing homes while the rest would

be attending special schools or units OR even mainstream schools --& then sheltered work or Day Centres. There is one such centre in the grounds of Ballamona now

the site of our general hospital.
