Re: Robert Edwin Hudgeon/Catherine Clague

I had pursued the same (apparent) Robert Hudgeon a while back, from a slightly peripheral perspective. I believe after having lost his first wife, Catherine, in 1900 he re-married Olive (Kermode) Qualtrough widow of Joseph Qualtrough. Without providing source details at this point in, summary, this is the trail I discovered:

Robert Hudgeon was born before 02 Aug 1856 in Lonan, IOM. His first with Catherine Clague was born about 1858; she died on 30 Jan 1900 in Douglas. Robert Hudgeon and Catherine Clague were married on 26 Jul 1881 in Malew, and had the following children: William Hudgeon was born on 26 Jun 1882 in Douglas; Thomas Clague Hudgeon was born on 25 Oct 1885 in Lonan (and died by drowning in Lake Moyie, British Columbia (BC) Canada) in 1908; Charles Edwin Hudgeon was born on 12 Mar 1893 in Lonan and died on 1 Jan 1868 in Salmon Arm, British Columbia); Ethel Maud Hudgoen was born on 7 May 1896 in Lonan. Margaret May Hudgeon was born on 21 Aug 1890 in Lonan. She married Clarence Hoy and died on 25 Jun 1974 in Salmon Arm, BC. Annie May Hudgeon was born on 18 Mar 1889 in Lonan and died 25 Sep 1889 in Lonan.

As noted, Robert's first wife Catherine died in 1900 at "Gob-Na-Geay, Conchan, Douglas". Interestingly, there was an article in the Manx Sun date 2 Apr 1902, regarding a Robert Hudgeon: "The Laxey Parish Commissioners have instituted proceedings against Robt. Hudgeon, of Gob-naGeay, in respect of an alleged nuisance on certain property of his at Glen Drink. The suit was to have been heard at the Douglas Petty Sessions on Saturday, but Hudgeon did not answer. It appeared that the Coroner found no one in Hudgeon's house and affixed the surmmons to the door handle".
Not sure this is the same Robt Hudgeon but sounds likely.

I then have that Robert Hudgeon married Olive Qualtrough (Olive Kermode, daughter of John Kermode and Margaret Kneale, b 14 Jul 1881 in Lonan) widow of Joseph Ambrose Qualtrough (they had a daughter Margaret Olive Qualtrough). Robert Hudgeon and Olive Kermode were married on 28 Apr 1906 in Douglas; they had no children.

While the connection between Robert Hudgeon and Olive Kermode Qualtrough, and the fate the children seem to fit I was unable to solidly confirm the fate of the relationship between Robert and Olive. Robert Hudgeon emigrated to Canada in 1906 with two sons, followed in 1907 and first settled in Alberta. Olive Hudgeon and her daughter Margaret appear in the 1911 England census in Lancashire, Eng. Accordingly, if these were the same parties, it would appear that the marriage did not last. Olive Hudgeon eventually moved to Wisconsin where her daughter married, and she died in 1942. To further complicate matters, Robert Hudgeon appears in the 1911 Canada census as a widower, with his three sons (Wm, Robt, Chrles) and two daughters (May & Ethel); then in 1916 as married (ironically his wife Catherine), with the three sons and daughter Ethel. If this is the same Robt Hudgeon who married Olive Qualtrough I found no evidence of a divorce.

You may find some of this discussion on this message board by searching for Hudgeon/Qualtrough/Kermode. If you have any information which might confirm the Robert Hudgeon-Olive Kermode Qualtrough connection it would be of interest.
