CORKILL, QUAYLE, POWE

Hello. I've posted on this Board several times over the years. But, I don't visit this Board often enough. I don't remember when I last posted, but I recommended the Board to some researchers this month so I thought I would post on it today.

My ancestors were John and Esther (CORKILL) CORKILL of the Lezayre Parish. They were married there in 1825 and had 2 sons, John, and then my ancestor, Evan, b1827 there. They then had 8 more children; I know some of their names. I've only found maybe one other person researching Evan's siblings. It was a researcher on this Board who told me who John's parents were, but I've never heard anything about Esther's parents. She was reportedly b ~1803 in the Lezayre Parish.

Evan married in ~1852 in Liverpool, but possibly also in Whitehaven - to Elizabeth QUAYLE / QUAIL b~1830 in Whitehaven, Cumberland. Her parents were Edward QUAYLE and Mary POWE. This surname has been discussed on the Cumberland List recently. That reminded me to look up Edward's parents, and I was reminded that he was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, in 1802 to parents: William and Margaret (?) QUAYLE. That's about all I know. I'm told that the surname originated on the IOM so it's possible that William was born on the IOM.

Evan and Elizabeth had 7 children who were raised in Liverpool. Edward Evan CORKILL was their first, then a son, Lewis CORKILL, who died around Age 10. Then Mary Elizabeth CORKILL, b1860 Liverpool, who would become my great-grandmother. When Evan's wife died ~1871, and Evan was a long-time mariner, the 5 youngest children, including Julia, Esther, John, and Robert went to live with their Uncle John. The oldest, Edward, ended up on the Akbar Training ship, and somehow made his way to British Columbia, Canada, in 1873. When the Liverpool Sheltering Homes opened in 1873, the 5 younger ones were placed there. In 1874 they were all sent to Nova Scotia, Canada, the youngest 5 and 3.

There is more information in the archives of this Board about this family, both from my postings and from the helpful responses.

And, I've also posted many postings on both the Isle of Man and Liverpool Mailing Lists at www.rootsweb.com

I've been participating on the Lists and Boards at www.rootsweb.com for 10 yrs. I am an Administrator for 9 Lists and now 4 Boards, including a List for CORKILL. (The List is for all spellings, including the original surnames they came from.)
