Re: IOM Researchers
In Response To: Re: IOM Researchers ()

Hi Sue,

Yes, there is a great deal of information which was discussed back in 2007. My sister-in-law is the Elena Fitzpatrick, who had started the research before me and before I found this excellent board and we pooled what we had after. Diane Williams has also been researching on the Maxwells and has been really helpful in sharing what she knows including her on-line tree. All together a lot of white space has been filled in over the last 5 years much of it thanks to information or connections coming from this forum.

On the James Moore birth I have recorded - "The middle name "Quiggin" chosen for some of their children could be significant. It is often a device for incorporating maiden or other family surnames into a given name. There is a James Quiggin Moore born to James Moore and Sarah Quiggin 28 Feb 1816 at S, Ramsey, IOM - source IGI Batch C038271. Also note that in the 1871 census of IOM his widowed wife Anne is living at 12 College Street in the household of Thomas Quiggin, 82."

Nonetheless, I have nothing to corroborate this birth - no other documentation that could bolster this possibility. The census information as a guide to his birthdate is contradictory - In 1841 the recorded age in the census would make his birth year 1821, in 1851 - 1820, in 1861 - 1816, and his (possible) burial record in 1867 suggests 1810 !!

In fact I am not sure that I am tracking the same person over the years. The most significant missing info (apart from his birth date/place) is whether it is the same James Moore who switches from being a "Coach Proprietor" in 1860 to a "Farmer" in Glenoldin. Until I can link the start, middle and end i'm not sure if it is one and the same - which leads me to the dead end. Here is the full set of information I have on James Moore (name / year / date / occupation / event / address / text / source) :-

James Moore b18?? 1816? Birth Born in the early 1800s (likely between 1810 - 1821) possibly in Ramsey (place of marriage and of the births of children) . 1851 census would place birth date around 1820. 1841 Census could place it as 1821. 1861 Census suggests birth date of 1816. Burial record suggests 1810. Married and all children christened in Ramsey. 1851 1861 Census. Burial record The middle name "Quiggin" chosen for some of their children could be significant. It is often a device for incorporating maiden or other family surnames into a given name. There is a James Quiggin Moore born to James Moore and Sarah Quiggin 28 Feb 1816 at S, Ramsey, IOM - source IGI Batch C038271. Also note that in the 1871 census of IOM his widowed wife Anne is living at 12 College Street in the household of Thomas Quiggin, 82.

James Moore b18?? 1867 information There is a WILL in 1867 for a James Moore of Lezayre re: E ref: 8 film: 0106471 From the official indices in the Archdeacon's (LDS film 0106195) and Episcopal (LDS film 0106366) Registries made available via www.lawsons.ca Is there a copy of the will in Manx museum?

Sorry for the long post. One thought, at least, was how to find out about the contents of the will and a second thought on house or land ownership when he apparently moved from being a coach proprietor in Ramsey to a Farmer in Glenoldin (not sure how the spelling hs evolved over the years).

Thanks for any clues - the researcher enquiry was because I thought this might need local access to documentation and searches. But if there is another way i'm up for it.

kind regards

John
