Re: CANNELL-CURPHEY--Gelling
In Response To: Re: CANNELL-CURPHEY--Gelling ()

I have a copy of a document I found in my mum's papers. JOHN CANNELL (1878/No 40), registered in Peel on 17 May 1878: It reads .........John Cannell of Cammal, Michael (died 15 Dec. 1877, age 71, therefore b. abt. 1806) intestate. ..This court decreed JOHN CURPHEY of Cammal administrator of all.............and to these ends he hath given pledges, namely ROBERT OATES of Ballahonna, Michael, and WILLIAM TEARE of Ballamennagh, Michael who have entered into and executed the usual Bond in presence of the Court.
2nd document (seems to be confirming pledges)...Whereas, the Ecclestastical Court in this Isle and Diocese of Sodar and Mann hath this day granted administration of the estate and effects of JOHN CANNELL of Cammell in Par. of Michael to JOHN CURPHEY of Cammal. Whereas ROBERT OATES of Balladhonna in Par of Michael, William TEARE of Ballamennagh in Par. of Michael have agreed to become pledges of...estate by said John Curphey according to law. Signed 7 May 1878 (signed by Robert Oates, William Teare.
3rd document: JOHN CANNELL's Distribution: Know all men by these presents that JOHN CURPHEY of Cammal in Michael, CHARLES CURPHEY** of Port Erin in par. of Rushen, CHARLES CANNELL of the town of Liverpool and JOHN CANNELL,((I think Jr. is squished in here) --added & initialed names: "and ANDREW KERR of Rupert Hill(?) in the town of Liverpool and ESTHER, his wife, of ditto" ) of the parish of Lezayre....(can't read a word)..and JAMES CURPHEY and WILLIAM CURPHEY both of the town of Whitehaven in England hereby own and acknowledge to have received from JOHN CURPHEY now of Ballakilley and late of Cammel in Michael aforesaid administrator of the Estate and effects of JOHN CANNEL late of Cammel aforesaid (admin of whose estate was granted to him on the 17th May 1878 the sum of ..........shares of the estate of the said JOHN CANNELL and they do hereby severally acquit and discharge the said JOHN CURPHEY admin and aforesaid and the estate of the said JOHN CANNELL from all claims and -----(can't read word) in respect thereof.

My questions, was this John Cannell a bro. of Ann? who is Charles Cannell of Liverpool?
I found a marr. cert. in Everton on May 20, 1869, England of Andrew Kerr and ESTHER CANNELL - FATHER CHRISTOPHER CANNELL, gardener. Witnesses JOHN CANNELL and CATHERINE SKILLICORN. On searching further I found Esther Cannell, b . abt 1840, parents: Chris Cannell** and Mary Fisher (parents: John and ESTHER CURPHEY!).

**Chris Cannell, chr. 1 May 1804, Kirk Michael; parents: JOHN CANNELL(b. abt. 1779, Michael) /JANE COWLEY*(b. abt. 1783 KM; died 25 Aug 1843 Michael??) m. 14 Jan 1804. They also had JOHN CANNELL, chr. 1 June 1806 Michael; Ann, b. April 12, 1809 St. Matthews, Dgls. Is this my Ann? She was underage when she married in 1829??

My conclusion: This is the will of John Cannell, chr. 1 June 1806 Kirk Michael, Ann's bro. who might have had no children. Therefore, the John Curphey Jr. (Ann's son) was appointed executor as he might have been the eldest son in IOM; William having gone to Whitehaven and Thomas Fred being in the Navy. Goods were distributed to Charles, James, William & Thomas Curphey, all sons of Wm. Curphey (who had remarried) & Ann's (Ann died in 1851). The Charles Cannell, b. 14 Sept 1842 Lezayre (lived in L'pool) , was the son of Christopher Cannell/Mary Fisher, John and Ann Cannell's brother. The John Jr. I think is John James, b. 23 June 1833, another son of Chris and Mary . The Esther Cannell, b. abt. 1840 Lezayre (m. to Andrew Kerr) was Christopher Cannell and Mary Fisher's child also. Nothing went to Christopher Cannell because he died 1877 Lezayre.
I know this is a lot to digest, but can you spare some time to give it a thought? Forever grateful. This is all to verify Ann's parents.

*Next door in an 1841 census was a Robert Cowley, b. abt 1816 Lez. (relatives of Jane Cowley?)/Jane farmer of 21 acres.
