Re: John Quayle & Catherine Moughtin

Doug, the Maughold parish register has:
John Quayle & Catherine Moughtin married in Maughold 27 Nov 1814. John from Lezayre.

I thought I had looked this up before for someone. Not you?

This is an extract from an old posting from Lois Ralph, about the Cannon or Cannell family, and the OTHER John Quayle/Cath family (in the "Second generation" Thomas F. Quayle)- just so that they don't get muddled up with your Lezayre John Quayle. As Frances wrote, they were having children bapt in Michael at around the same time as your ones were being bapt in Lezayre:

....But, if we assume that the Cannell family on the Meridian is actually a Cannon family, and, indeed, the Cannon family from Kk Lonan, then this is what we have:

Philip Cannon family of Kk Lonan

Philip Cannon was born about 1779. He married, at Lonan, November 7, 1811, Margaret Lewin.

They are perhaps the family of Philip Cannell (sic), who immigrated from Liverpool on the Meridian, arriving in New York, July 2, 1827.

Manifest # 404: Philip Cannal 48 farmer Great Britain ; Mary 48; Eleanor 13 ; James 11; Philip 6; Mary 5; John 4; William 1.

Children of Margaret Lewin and Philip Cannon: baptized at Kk Lonan

+ i. Ellinor Cannon was baptized December 15, 1811. She married, at his first wife, at Cleveland, May 21, 1835, Thomas F. Quayle. See John Quayle family of Newburg.

+ ii. James Cannon was baptized April 3, 1814. He married, about 1841, Rhoda _____.

+ iii. Philip Cannon was baptized March 31, 1816. He married, in Brooklyn, December 22, 1847, Mary E. Landfair.

iv.Margaret Cannon was baptized August 15, 1819. (With her sister Eleanor in 1850 census)

+ v. John Cannon was baptized June 22, 1823. He married Rebecca T. Smart.

vi.William Cannon was baptized November 26, 1826. (Not located in Ohio)

Second Generation

Thomas F. Quayle (John - Catherine Moughton) was baptized at Kk Michael, May 9, 1811, and died in Cleveland, January 31, 1895. He married first, in Cleveland, May 21, 1835, Eleanor Cannon. She was born in the Isle of Man, about 1812, and died in September 1860. She is probably the daughter of Philip and Margaret (Lewin) Cannon, baptized at Kk Lonan, December 15, 1811.

Thomas married second, in Cleveland, February 2, 1867, Mary P. Proudfoot, daughter of John and Mary (Richardson) Proudfoot. She was born July 9, 1840, and died in Cleveland, March 28, 1909.

Thomas Quayle was a prominent Cleveland shipbuilder for over 32 years.

Len replied:
"I notice on the same page of manx notebook that the family of John Quayle and Catherine Moughtin arrived in New York a few days after the Cannans, on board the Chilli."

Presumably this was the family from Michael.

Do you know when your ones left the Isle of Man?

The Lezayre extracted bapts in the IGI are for George 10 Feb.1817; Margery 17 May 1818, and John 21 April 1821.

Which one was your ancestor, and what details do you have about him/her?
