Re: Snaefell mine disaster
In Response To: Re: Snaefell mine disaster ()

Donna, thank you for the burial information for Robert Kelly. I have been working on fitting this event into my family history for many years. I was on the Isle of Man in 1997 when they had the 100 year memorial for the men who were lost in the disaster. I did not know at the time that my family was connected. When I returned from my visit to the island I spent several days at the geneology library in Salt Lake City looking for family records. I collected all of the birth, marriage and death records of all of my grandmother's brothers and sisters. There were many of them. It was a surprize and a shock when I accidently came accross all of the details of the Snaefell mine disaster including the story of the death and the recovery of the body of Robert Kelly. I am hoping that there is someone out there who will correct me if I am wrong but I beleive that Robert's brother. John James Kelly is the J Kelly that was a member of the party who went to the 130 fathom level of the mine to retrieve Robert's body. John James Kelly was indeed my grandmother's brother. Interestingly John James Kelly died the 29th of June that same year from lung disease and exhaustion. He was attended by the same Dr Miller who attended the rescued miners at Snaefell. My thoughts are that John James Kelly was so affected by the air in the mine that he died a slow death.
