Re: Wallace family
In Response To: Re: Wallace family ()

Today I visited the Wallace grave & looked close up at the carving of the MI ----strange letters A & E with no horizontals bars etc despite it being a tall,
rather grand sandstone headstone. The problem name is I believe SYDNEY although I was expecting an " i ". Next weekend I shall be at a IOMFHS gathering
& so will give them an amendment with your evidence. I searched for Sydney Wallace. assuming he used his step grandfather's name, in " IOM & Great War" by
SARGEAUNT , Brown & Sons Ltd. Douglas. The family had presumably offered the info. "Wallace Sydney / Private / Canadian Forces" However I still cannot find
his record in CWGC site. We don't know what surname he joined up with. Son John was brought home from the Bagthorpe Military Hospital in England for burial with
his parents & eventually his widow was buried there too. The grave does have a small official ? plaque added for him, haven't seen one before. I noticed the headstone
had lilies of the valleys carved on it & in the plot were several clumps of white snowdrops just coming into flower. I believe they are exceptionally early this year
because of the bitterly cold weather ---the reverse of what you might expect. Thank you again Sue for your interest & help.
