has anyone done similar work then on the Irish family names ?
there is an interesting Giltsmith (an iron worker) in the Garrison roll - possibly a gillsmith ? or related to your 'goldsmiths' - ? a strange amalgam of an english name smith(trans tear ?) + gill - servant ?
